Products we believe are suitable for the SCD(tm) Diet based on the information in the book Breaking The Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet (see below). However Dietary Needs Direct can take no responsibility for any incorrect listing, purchase decision or product use as a result of using this website for any diet, intolerance or allergy and shoppers are always advised to check ingredients or diet guidelines from source carefully themselves before choosing a product(s)

Brief Overview
There are specific carbohydrates which can cause problems for some digestive systems, especially for people suffering from Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Cystic Fibrosis, Chronic Diarrhea, Candidiasis, IBS and Coeliac Disease. The purpose of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD™) is to eliminate these carbohydrates and cause a healthy, natural, controlled remission.

The premise of the diet is that damaged intestinal walls and bacterial overgrowth are a part of a viscious cycle that can cause havoc with the body's health and immunity. The diet restricts the type of carbohydrates that feed these bacteria, thereby restoring the body's inner ecology

The Diet Basics & Mechanics
This information is kindly taken from the scdiet.org website. The link is listed below and it is an extremely useful and informative site for anyone thinking about trying the diet or already implementing it. See below for more details

“The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD™) is a strict grain-free, lactose-free, and sucrose-free dietary regimen intended for those suffering from Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac Disease, IBD, and IBS.

Of all dietary components, carbohydrates have the greatest influence on intestinal microbes (yeast and bacteria) which are believed to be involved in intestinal disorders. Most intestinal microbes require carbohydrates for energy. The SCD™ works by severely limiting the availability of carbohydrates to intestinal microbes. When carbohydrates are not digested, they are not absorbed. They remain in the intestinal tract, thus encouraging microbes to multiply by providing food for them. This can lead to the formation of acids and toxins which can injure the small intestine. Once bacteria multiply within the small intestine, they can destroy the enzymes on the intestinal cell surface, preventing carbohydrate digestion and absorption. At this point, production of excessive mucus may be triggered as the intestinal tract attempts to "lubricate" itself against the irritation caused by the toxins, acids, and the presence of incompletely digested and unabsorbed carbohydrates.

The SCD™ is based on the principle that specifically selected carbohydrates requiring minimal digestion are well absorbed, leaving virtually nothing for intestinal microbes to feed on. As the microbes decrease due to lack of food, their harmful by-products also diminish. No longer needing protection, the mucus producing cells stop producing excessive mucus and carbohydrate digestion is improved. The SCD™ corrects malabsorption, allowing nutrients to enter the bloodstream and be made available to the cells of the body, thereby strengthening the immune system's ability to fight. Further debilitation is prevented, weight can return to normal, and ultimately there is a return to health”

What to Eat & What to Avoid
The scdiet.org website has a comprehensive overview of both disallowed and allowed food. Rather than copying it here (which might infringe on copyright regulations), please click on this link to view the page What To Eat. From this list and also from Elaine Gottshall’s book (see Founders & Development), we have selected some of the allowed or ‘legal’ foods that we are able to get hold of and supply (i.e. products that are ambient). For allowed supplements, please visit the pecanbread.com website (see link below) or click here to access the page directly. Allowed Supplements

There is also a very good 'legal' list at www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info

Founders & Development
The diet was developed by Dr. Sydney Valentine Haas, and is described in his book, "The Management of Celiac Disease" for Elaine Gottschall's daughter who was saved by the SCD™, causing Elaine to further research the diet and to describe it in further detail in her own book, "Breaking The Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet". We are currently trying to get this title (and other SCD™ relevant ones) into our Bookshop section, but in the meantime, it can be purchased from www.amazon.co.uk amongst other places

SCD™ & Autism
The SCD™ is quickly becoming an officially recognized treatment for those on the Autistic Spectrum and is giving dramatic results for those that follow it carefully.

A paper has been written by Jeffrey A. Trelka and Brian S. Hooker entitled “Specific Carbohydrate Dietary Trial: Understanding the Effectiveness of a Specific Carbohydrate Dietary Intervention In Autistic Children." Which is an informative read on some of the key areas of a study recently conducted and can be accessed here or from Elaine Gottshall’s site. This site (see below for link) also contains several other important links including:

  • Notes from the DAN Conference 2004
  • A new chapter on the SCD™ and Autism written by Elaine herself
  • The story of Isaiah, a 6 year old autistic boy written by his mother Pam about his dramatic improvement on the SCD™ Diet
  • An additional article by Elaine entitled “Recognizing Celiac behavior and catching it early by using SCD™ - would it prevent Autism? “
  • An article by Jody Goddard about Autism & GI Problems
  • Information on the Brain Gut Connection
  • Other Information

It should be noted that Elaine Gottshall suggests that it is best to use a modified version of the SCD™ and not the SCD™ starter diet for adults. When beginning the SCD™ for children, parents also need to be aware of the results to expect and suggests visiting this website to learn more. www.pecanbread.com. This site focuses on children and the diet (see Websites To Visit for more information)
